Botanical Structures is a series designed to visually explore the vast array of aesthetical forms found in the botanical world. It encompasses a multitude of plant species and seeks to emphasize their inherent beauty through photography.

Visualising the ancient structures of these plants, helps us to appreciate the beautiful textures that the plant world has to offer; the myriad of miniscule hair follicles hidden on the underside of a leaf, or the exquisitely preserved blueprints of a dead leaf skeleton. The images seek to emphasize the importance of preserving the world of plants, if for nothing else their inherent beauty.

River Amble - Jamie Greaves.jpg

Jamie Greaves

Following the footsteps of J.M.W. Turner, Jamie Greaves presents a photographic tour exploring features and elements of the sublime across the South West of England. Witnessing nature’s raw power and its unbending grasp over the natural environment. Each image presents abstract portrayals influenced by Turner’s historic landscape paintings. Represented through painterly aesthetics Greaves visualises dramatic vistas spanning both land and sea. Transporting the viewer to atmospheric scenes which host a multitude of weathers, topographies and subject matters. The expedition visits five counties including Dorset and its Jurassic coast, to Sennen on the very fringes of the land within Cornwall.

Nature has been embroidered onto monolithic, blocky and geometric architecture and as a result, the brutality of these buildings is lifted by nature’s natural shades. The post-war modernism, beton brut (raw concrete) theme displays the smooth, clean and minimalistic qualities it holds, providing the perfect backdrop for vegetated walls. These photographs pull inspiration from the documentary and minimalistic style of Hilla and Bernd Becher’s work. Whilst also incorporating Heleme Binet’s imaginative way of capturing light and shadows.

This work highlights not only the potential for sustainable food growth but also the necessary changes humanity needs to make to the urban environment. As the population grows and with it the demand for food, solutions to cope with the increasing need to be adopted. We need to rekindle our relationship to the natural world, especially within urban areas where limited green space exists. Being creative with food production can reintroduce the connection, whilst educating people about being self-sufficient. Urban Greening questions the norm and pushes the boundaries of conventional living walls.

This project is about exploring the relationship between my botanical photography and my fathers artwork which also focuses on botany. The work from both myself and my father accompanies by an explanation detailing who inspired them and how each of us felt about the other using flowers as a primary subject to photograph/ paint.
